Artefacts can be like Shaman drums

Earlier today I wrote, that my solo exhibition is not done solely by me. Living in this world today, I feel I belong to many communities. Even if I stay almost half of the year in countryside, in Finland, Northern Europe. 

My exhibition named Artefacts will be opend in few days in a Library, far away from big cities. For many years I have observed the changes, that occur in the European small villages and rural communities. People want to live and work in their natural environment and maintain their own way of life. It has become harder every year. 

The study of Artefacts has been made by using my hands in many ways; doing handwork, painting, writing, taking photographs, which leads me to dancing and singing. But what is an Artefact? Could it be a dance? Could it be a piece of music?  I try to make this out by meeting other individuals, who share my interests in different fields of art. I´ve learnt to live in rural community, that consists of creative people, of small creative groups of common people. My artefacts try tell about encounters with this beautiful creativity, that all mankind share.

Today I joined the group of Woolmakers in the small village of Sysmä. The Woolmakers consist of women from about 20 to 80 years of age. They gather together every other week in order to make handicrafts in the local bookshoop. Today there was an amazing collection of shaman drums to be seen in the showroom upstairs. 

The artist is Ms. Taru Rajavuori, who lives in the village. 

The drum-skins were translucent paintings. When I stared at the painting it started to stare back at me, changing its coloring. When I started drumming, the sound changed according to my own voice. This is also an illustration what artefacts can be.

Nature is the greatest teacher. The Wildlife seems to be highly more civilized compared to what I´ve experienced in the metropolis of our world. And today it is possible to stay and work far from big cities. Art Exhibitions can be created together, even if we stayed on the other side of the world. We can easily be joined by using the means of technology. 

All my artefacts have errors, faults, they are not ready completed pieces of art, but they are on their way to make other shapes, other forms. They will come into being, when taking part also to communities we share here.

Riika Taidepiika: Artefakti-näyttely Sysmän kirjastossa syyskuun ajan

Sain hienon tilaisuuden järjestää näyttelyni Sysmän kirjastossa syyskuussa 2013. Kiitos Sysmä! Tulossa on Riika Taidepiika, Artefakti-näyttely. Mikä se on? Kunpa tietäisin. Riika Taidepiika tutkii sitä töillään. Kyse on ilosta ja energiasta, kun tehdään vapaasti värikkäitä töitä käsillä ja päällä.

Artefaktini voivat sisältää melkein mitä tahansa; virkkausta, neulomista, maalausta, valokuvaa, kirjoitusta, musiikkia, tanssia, videoita. Kaikki nämä ovat käsitapoja. Jo yhdessä työssä niitä voi esiintyä useampia. Olen kirjoittanut aiheesta aiemmin tänä vuonna osana projektia TEE ITE - Kajahtaneet kudelmat. Lisätietoja löytyy blogini otsikosta "Artefaktit". 

TEE ITE -projektissa on kyse SM-tason kilpailusta, johon kaikki on kutsuttu mukaan. Sitä on suunniteltu avoimella yhteistyöperiaatteella sosiaalisessa mediassa ja tapaamisin. Alkuperäisenä kokoonkutsujana on toiminut muotoilukasvatuksen läänintaiteilija Mari Savio (TAIKE, Uudenmaan aluepiste). Olen osallistunut TEE ITE -toimintaan 2013 talvella Sysmästä käsin: tehnyt ite Sysmän Willanikkareissa ja osallistunut uuden valokuvaajien yhteisön, Sysmän Harrastekuvaajien toimintaan.

Näyttelylläni on myös oma teema: Sysmä. Kaikki esille tulevat artefaktit on tehty Sysmässä. Kaupungin kiireistä on vuosien ajan ajan ollut tärkeä päästä hengittämään ympäristöön, jossa löytyy luonnonrauhan lisäksi ympärivuotista kulttuuritoimintaa. Ystäviä, jotka jakavat kiinnostukseni kohteita taiteen eri aloilta. Täältä olen löytänyt tilaa, jossa vapasti iloita: piirtää, laulaa, soittaa, maalata akvarelleja, virkata, neuloa, kirjoittaa ja rakentaa ympäristöön vaikka runoja ja installaatioita, jotka voi tallentaa valokuvaamalla.

Ylistys lapsuuteni (ja minussa yhä elävän lapsen) Sysmälle. Olen elänyt täällä kulttuurikehdossa vapaa-ajan asukkaana tänä vuonna 45 vuotta.
